Community Programs

Purrs for Autism

PLEASE NOTE – PURRS FOR AUTISM HAS BEEN CANCELED FOR THE REMAINDER OF 2018.

The program will re-launch in 2019. Stay tuned for more information.

The Hermitage No-Kill Cat Shelter has partnered with the Autism Society of Southern Arizona to create this unique program. Purrs for Autism is for children and youth with autism ages 5-18; it promotes therapeutic and educational interaction with healthy, sociable cats from The Hermitage Cat Shelter.

Participants socialize and cuddle with the kitties; and have access to quiet and calm activities (coloring, puzzles, and books.)

Purrs for Autism is held every Tuesday 3:30PM-4:30PM at Workability offices located at 601 N Craycroft Rd. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Siblings are welcome!

To register or for more information, email our Community Outreach Coordinator, Ashley at [email protected] or call (520) 571-7839.

Classroom Kitties

What better way to teach your students about animals and pet care than to have a Hermitage staff member and kitty visit your classroom? We’ll talk to your students about our shelter, our cats, and responsible pet care. We’ll even bring along a fuzzy friend to cuddle.

No pets allowed? Not a problem! We can leave the kitties behind and share pictures instead!

For more information, email our Community Outreach Coordinator, Ashley at [email protected] or call (520) 571-7839.

Read to a Cat

The Hermitage No Kill Cat Shelter has partnered with Literacy Connect to establish our children’s literacy program. All kids of any age are welcome to drop in during the summer and read to a cat! At the end of their visit they are welcome to take a book home and continue to read throughout the summer. All kids are welcomed from Tuesday – Saturday 10am – 4:30 pm.

For more information, email our Community Outreach Coordinator, Ashley at [email protected] or call (520) 571-7839.

Snuggles for Seniors

For seniors, interacting with a pet can be life altering. Feelings of loneliness or isolation can melt away with a simple stroke and purring response. The physical and mental health benefits of interacting with a furry companion can be many-from reduced blood pressure to elevated serotonin levels.

Snuggles for Seniors takes place at multiple retirement homes located in Tucson several times a month. For more information, email our Community Outreach Coordinator, Ashley at [email protected] or call (520) 571-7839.

Meows for Military

The Hermitage’s Meows for Millitary is a program for military veteran at the Southern Arizona VA Healthcare System in the Community Living Center. Each Week our outreach coordinator and a feline ambassador visit our proud veterans and provide supportive therapy to help heal their wounds and lift their spirits.
